Radical Remission~surviving cancer against all odds

Radical Remission is a wonderful book that talks about 9 elements that radical remission cancer survivors have used to heal their bodies.  Not one thing alone works but using several elements together can help the body to heal from illness and disease.  As a cancer coach, nutritionist, & Time Line therapist, hypnotherapist, I teach clients to combine these very same elements together to effect change.

The number one thing that patients do is to radically change their diet!  Increasing vegetables, organic fruit, whole grains, eating whole foods, juicing, and eliminating dairy, wheat, gluten, meat, sugar, and processed foods. Giving the body the nutrients it needs to fight disease and increase the immune system and natural killer cells.

Taking control of your own health and the ideal that in order for healing to occur, you must be willing to make changes even if those changes are time consuming and emotionally difficult.  Instead of relying in quick fix pills, you may need to make serious changes in your life in order to regain your health.  You may need to leave your stressful job or marriage in order to heal, whatever it is, evaluate, reflect and listen to your inner voice to do what is right for you.

Following your intuition.  The body knows what it needs to heal and it can often let you know why you got sick in the first place.  This belief goes against western medicine, which usually removes patients from the  planning process while the doctors determine a course of treatment after diagnosis.  IF the mind is allowed to quiet down, it will know what it needs to do in order to be well again.  Cancer is only a messenger that says something has gone wrong or out of alignment.  Find out what that something is, that root cause and correct it to heal the body.

Using Herbs and Supplements:  The difference between chemo and vitamins is that chemo kills cancer cells & the immune system while most supplements are designed to  strengthen the immune system so that it can remove cancer cells.  These 2 treatment styles stem from 2 different belief systems.  Vitamins and Herbs alone  will not do the trick however, combining them with all the other elements to heal the body may mean the difference between life and death just as diet alone may not work either.

Releasing suppressed emotions- suppressed emotions are any emotions you are hanging onto from your past that are negative, positive, conscious or unconscious.  We hold onto negative one's such as anger, fear, sadness, and hurt.  Suppressed emotions may be conscious or unconscious, meaning you may not be able to remember them fully.  It could be from traumatic memories or events in the past, accidents, abuse are often blocked from one's conscious memory.  You can release these negative emotions easily with Time Line Therapy, hypnotherapy and using other healing modalities such as Reiki, yoga and meditation.

Increase positive emotions:  Happiness is a habit and a state that you can access at any time.  We all have happy memories that we can access and we an do it daily to make it a habit.  For cancer survivors that were interviewed, they had to force themselves to think of past happy events and memories in the beginning or they chose to watch funny shows and movies to increase their happiness.  They discovered that by doing this daily, it became a habit and the feeling of happiness came quickly the more they practiced it.

Embrace social support:  We are social creatures by nature and humans need each other to survive.  Researchers have discovered that loved one's help our bodies in a sophisticated way.  When we are surrounded by them, even our pets the feeling of being loved releases a flood of hormones into the bloodstream which makes us feel better emotionally but also strengthens our immune system significantly.

Deepening your spiritual connection:  Having a connection to a deeper or higher energy which some people call God and others call it the soul or energy or chi.  One may pray to find this connection others may have a deep yoga practice or meditation practice that they follow.  Whatever it is for you, is right for you, practice is daily, connect to your inner spirit and faith.

Having strong reasons for living:  Survivors that were interviewed said that they wanted to live and for many reasons.  Having confidence to your core that you want to keep living, to get excited about life was a recurring factor for cancer patients of radical remissions.  It is a recurring fact in this book that the mind leads the body, not the other way around.  Its a proven fact that when you have strong enough thought or emotion, powerful hormones and released instantly into the bloodstream and have either beneficial or detrimental effect on your immune system depending on the nature of your thoughts and emotions.

While each chapter in the book contains healing stories, its important to remember that it is never just one factor that helped people get well but a multitude of factors.  Empowerment is the key, cancer is a devastating disease and people often feel powerless since it can sneak up without any warming.  Finding your power will require some effort on your part, you can do it.

Top Nutrients to Help Heal the Body

Since over a quarter of a million of women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer this year, this dreaded C disease is affecting many children, spouses and communities.  Fortunately, there is change in the wind with relatively new sciences called Epigenetics and Nutrigenomics that study the effect of specific nutrient and plant chemicals and how they affect our gene expression. Scientists have discovered that specific phytochemicals can actually turn on healthy detoxification genes and turn off the inflammatory genes that often lead to disease.

Here is a sample list of the power behind nature’s “farmacy” and the role it plays in healing and preventing not just Breast Cancer but all types of cancer.
  1. Prevent DNA damage
  2. Control regulatory genes
  3. Turn off Inflammation that promotes cancer
  4. Block excessive cell division
  5. Reverse malignant cells to healthy cells
  6. Trigger cancer cell death or apoptosis
  7. Block abnormal growth factors
  8. Cut off blood supply to tumors
  9. Prevent spread or metastasis of cancer

Here is a partial list of what Dr. V refer to as “Tumor Terminators”.

These are specific nutrients that have a powerful healing effect on the body.  If you go to www.pubmed.org which is the United States National Library of Medicine, you can get lost in the amount of evidence – based research about the nutrients that offer hope for prevention and healing cancer naturally.
  Blood root
  Melatonin
  Selenium
  Sulforaphane from Broccoli sprouts
  Vitamin D
  Iodine
  Resveratrol
  Curcumin
Flax seed oil and fish oils
  Soy isoflavones
  Green tea polyphenols
  I3C from cruciferous vegetables
  Frankincense Essential Oil

I Have Cancer, What should I Eat?

5/26/2015

Many cancer patients become afraid after a diagnosis because they really don't know what to eat.  Some may stop eating because they fear that what they do eat will feed the cancer cells and make the cancer grow.  If a person with cancer doesn't consume the right foods in abundance, they may soon find themselves in a very vulnerable state.

We know that sugar feeds cancer.  Staying away from sugar and high glycemic foods is the first step.  Foods that come in packages with ingredients listed that you cannot pronounce should not be consumed.  God created many wholesome foods for us to eat, fresh vegetables, fruits, grains, beans, sea vegetables, nuts & seeds.

Cancer patients need to build thier immune systems so their bodies can withstand and fight off various types of illness and disease. Its scary to hear people say they have just stopped eating or eat very little. Nutrition is the only thing that will give the body what it needs to fight the disease and regain health. If you limit quality nutrition, it can actually allow the cancer or the disease to become stronger.

Severe malnutrition and weight loss play a role in at least one in five cancer deaths.  About half of all cancer patients eventually suffer serious weight loss and malnutrition, a wasting syndrome called “cachexia” where they don’t just lose excess fat but vital muscle. A healthy person’s body adjusts when it doesn’t get enough calories, slowing metabolism to conserve nutrients. A person who has cancer doesn’t make that adjustment and their metabolism may even speed up. Absorption and assimilation of proteins, carbohydrates and fats in people with cancer is compromised.

The National Cancer Institute estimates cachexia (loss of weight, muscle atrophy, fatigue, weakness, and significant loss of appetite) is the immediate cause of death for at least 20 percent of people with cancer although advanced cancer might have eventually claimed many of them.

Flooding the body with nutrition from the start can prevent not only cachexia, but can create such a strong immune system that it will empower the body to fight the battle against the cancer resulting in the healing of the body. Isn't it amazing the body God designed and gave us is capable of healing itself when we nourish it properly!

The quality of life for someone with cancer who is consuming large amounts of daily freshly extracted vegetable juices and lots of fresh vegetables and leafy greens, whether in salads or blended into pureed salads, is likely to feel less pain, quicker recovery time, and improved outlook in health and life.

If the cancer steals your appetite and you have nausea then small amounts of freshly extracted vegetable juices can give great relief. Dehydration is just as deadly as cancer. Consistently providing small amounts of juices will help the body stay hydrated, and provide the nourishment needed without exacerbating nausea.   Ginger has been used for thousands of years for nausea, make a ginger tea with ginger essential oil, OR a peppermint tea which will be helpful.  You can place a drop or two of peppermint oil on a tissue and inhale the scent when you feel nauseated, or put the oils in a diffuser.  To learn more about oils click HERE

Cancer patients receive these and many useful tips when working with a Certified Cancer Coach.  We understand that nutrition and what to eat when you have an illness such as cancer can be very confusing, its important to eat nutrient dense foods that will give you strength and healing.

You must eat!  Include Nutritious greens, vegetables, low glycemic fruits, 50-80% raw foods, healthy vegan proteins, seeds, beans, lentils, garlic, onions, leeks, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower.  Try to include sea vegetables daily, nori, wakame, kombu, dulse and kelp.  If you do eat fish, make sure it is Pacific Wild Caught Fish only.  Although fish oils have been found to protect us from cancer, fish act as reservoirs of toxic environmental chemicals that circulate on global air currents and fall into our rivers and oceans as rain.

Cancer patients are also encouraged to consume turmeric daily as it has anti tumor and anti inflammatory activity.  It improves liver enzymes to detoxify, relieves intestinal gas and is cleansing to the blood and skin. Shitake Mushrooms have been found to increase the numbers of macrophages, t-killer cells and t-helper cells.   If you are not allergic to tomatoes, try to eat some everyday.  Tomatoes have lycopene which is a form of carotene and a good antioxidant.   It is 5 times more bio-available when tomatoes are cooked and olive oil improves the absorption of lycopene.

Are you getting enough GREENS?

5/6/2015

"Greens are the No. 1 food you can eat regularly to help improve your health," says many nutritionists and RD's.  That's because leafy vegetables are brimming with fiber along with vitamins, minerals, and plant-based substances that may help protect you from heart disease, diabetes, and perhaps even cancer. Even so, Americans are not eating as many vegetables each day as dietary experts recommend.

Drink Your Green Smoothies
Not many people these days likes to eat a big bowl of leafy greens. I do love a nice big salad but many days i am on the run so i drink my greens!   I get my greens from delicious vegetable and fruit smoothies. I drink my spinach, kale, chard and dandelion greens while savoring the flavors of pineapple, mango, pear and berries!

How Much Green Should You Eat?
The food pyramid suggests a minimum of 3 servings of leafy greens per week. Most people fall short of this recommendation. Most health experts agree that the amount of leafy greens that we should consume is likely much higher than just 3 servings per week!  If you have cancer, leafy greens should be consumed daily!  Several times per day.

I eat about 4-6 servings per day (that’s about two small bunches or “heads”), mostly in green smoothies.
