What is NLP & How can it Help Me?

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming, a name that encompasses the three most influential components involved in producing human experience: neurology, language and programming. The neurological system regulates how our bodies function, language determines how we interface and communicate with other people and our programming determines the kinds of models of the world we create & our behaviors. Neuro-Linguistic Programming describes the fundamental dynamics between mind (neuro) and language (linguistic) and how their interplay affects our body and behavior (programming). 

NLP provides tools and skills for the development of states of individual excellence, but it also establishes a system of empowering beliefs and presuppositions (assumptions) about what human beings are, what communication is and what the process of change is all about. 

NLP was originated by John Grinder (whose background was in linguistics) and Richard Bandler (whose background was in mathematics and gestalt therapy) for the purpose of making explicit models of human excellence. Their first work The Structure of Magic Vol. I & II (1975, 1976) identified the verbal and behavioral patterns of therapists Fritz Perls (the creator of gestalt therapy) and Virginia Satir (internationally renowned family therapist). Their next work Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, M.D. Vol. I & II (1975, 1976) examined the verbal and behavioral patterns of Milton Erickson, founder of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and one of the most widely acknowledged and clinically successful psychiatrists of our times.

 So, how can NLP help me?
  • You find yourself living in, and thinking about the past.
  • You constantly procrastinate when you need to complete a project or deadline.
  • You feel depressed, sad, upset and you’re not sure why.
  • You want your performance to improve at work so you can ask for more money.
  • You keep failing at a new health regime, falling off the wagon after a week or month and feel frustrated at yourself.
  • You’re stuck in a rut, situation or relationship and don’t know how to get out.
  • You lack self confidence which prevents you from speaking up or taking action.
  • You’re a sales person and want to get more sales.
  • You want to improve mental and physical performance.
  • You want to reveal the barriers that keep you locked in position, restraining you from freedom and independence.

These are just a few examples of how NLP can help you. NLP can be applied to pretty much anything where you want to improve how you do something, how you feel and how you think.

How to Menu Plan?

Do you know how to menu plan for yourself and your family?  What happens at 4pm when your thoughts turn towards food and you wonder, what the heck are we going to have for dinner?  Sometimes people and families go out because they think its just easier, fast and cheap.  Or maybe you swing by the grocery store and pick up a few frozen dinners?

Some people may enjoy being creative and making something out of whatever is left in the fridge and cupboards. Or if you're like me, you may like to have a plan and a list when you go to the store so you know exactly what to pick up and how much it will cost.

Set up a time each week to write out your grocery list.  Go through some of your favorite healthy recipes as well as take into account any upcoming special events that week.  Be sure to have a sheet of paper with each day of the week written down along with each meal and snacks.  Write out your food plan and transfer any food items needed to a grocery list. On your meal planning worksheet, write down the recipe name and page number if you are preparing foods from a particular recipe.  

Decide what to prepare. It might be helpful to build in some routine as you first get started. Maybe Tuesday night is always fish night. Fridays you always go out to eat. Saturday is healthy homemade pizza night. You get the point. This helps makes the whole process feel a little less daunting.

Remember that you can always make great meals with leftovers.  If you cooked a chicken the day before, any leftovers can be used to make soups, chicken wraps or tacos.

That’s it! Learning how to menu plan is actually pretty simple, but it will only work if you do it.
